Pavement – November 16, 1999

The video and audio of a great show from a great band.

From the early noisy singles to the unfortunate end, I loved everything they did. Every album, all the odd singles, the tribute to REM, the Schoolhouse Rock cover, the Space Ghost appearance and jams (which was genius). I even had all the Silver Jews stuff. It’s rare that a group can continue to produce top notch songs without pissing me off somewhere down the line. They never did, except when they broke up.

So I love this setlist. I would never hear a song and think “damn, why are they playing this?” anyways, so I love all the setlists really. But there is something special going on here, even though Malkmus’ claims that they’re “tight” and he mentions being “nervous” a few times. I’ll admit, the banter is oddly tense at times, and the massivly indecisive choice-of-encore banter is a little telling. Maybe he was glimpsing past the show to their imminent future, and realizing this would be one of the last times they would perform together…at least for now…

Download the FLAC here. Now, dammit.
